It helps with both cooling and keeping humidity down a little, I also hung a pantyhose leg with 1 pound of rice to help with the humidity. I have another hose filled with powdered laundry soap to help with the smell, having a landlord around can create alot of problems for you, are you using exhaust fans going outside? I haven't had a problem with smell since my grow exhaust into the attic and out the rafters.
