Making Near Pure Alcohol

Ingredients / Equipment necessary:
  • Everclear (obtainable at places like BevMo and some liquor stores).
  • Epsom Salt (Any drug store and most grocery stores & Walmart or Target)
  • Cookie Sheet
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Blender
  • Several Jars with airtight lid (i.e. Mason Jars)
  • Vacuum Filter setup is desired, but a coffee filter can be used if you are willing to deal with sharp pains in your ass.
The Science behind it:
Epsom salt and Pure Ethanol are both very hydroscopic (Really wants water very bad). However Epsom Salts are more hydroscopic than pure Ethonal.
Everclear is 75.5% Ethanol by Volume
The molecular mass of Ethanol is 46.06844(232) g/mol
The Density of liquid Ethanol is 0.789 g/mL
The Molar Mass of Water is 18.0153 g/mol
The Density of Water is 0.998 g/mL
The molecular mass of Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate anhydrous) is 120.415(g/mol) (Note anhydrous means it contains no water)
For every molecule of non-dehydrated Epsom salt there are 7 molecules of water attached to it.
1 Liter of Everclear is 0.775(L) Ethanol and 0.225(L) Water (By Volume).

=> 1 Liter of Everclear contains: 1000(mL)*0.225*0.998(g/mL)=224.55(g) of Water
&
1000(mL)*0.775*0.789(g/mL)=611.475(g) of Ethanol

=> 1 Liter of Everclear contains:
224.55(g)/18.0153(g/mol)=12.5(mol) Water
&
611.475(g)/46.06844(g/mol)=13.3(mol) Ethanol

=> We require at least:
[12.5(mol)*120.415(g/mol)] / 7 =214(g) Epsom Salt
to dehydrate the Everclear.

To make it even more favorable to get pure Ethanol you should probably double that number e.g. 428(g) Dehydrated Epsom Salt.

The steps:
  1. Put Aluminum foil in your cookie sheet (This makes it easier to get the Epsom salts out later).
  2. Fill the cookie sheet with Epsom salts and put in the oven at 400 deg(F) for several hours. The Epsom salts will melt in the cookie sheet and become a solid hard rock when all of the water has evaporated out.
  3. NOTE: Dehydrated Epsom salts will quickly pull moister from the air, so work quickly with them while they are not being stored in an airtight container.
  4. Very quickly with oven mitts take out the cookie sheet and pull up the Aluminum foil and break the _VERY_HOT_ Epsom Salt brick into chunks. Put these chunks into Mason jars with tightened lids to cool down.
  5. After the Epsom salts have cooled, quickly weigh out enough Epsom salts to dehydrate your Everclear, and put both the Everclear and the Epsom Salts into a blender and puree it well.
  6. Put the Epsom Salt/Everclear slurry into a Mason Jar and tighten the lid. Shake well, and put in the freezer overnight.
  7. Note: Anhydrous Ethanol will quickly pull moister from the air, so work quickly with it when outside of a sealed container or less you have just undone your hard work.
  8. Quickly vacuum filter your Epsom Salt/Everclear slurry, and store the Anhydrous Ethanol in a Mason Jar with the lid on tight.
