MA: Marijuana Tax May Rise, Other Regulations May Be Coming With Legalization

Boston – Massachusetts is now the only state on the East Coast to legalize recreational marijuana, but top state leaders are already pondering changes to the new law.

Senate President Stanley Rosenberg (D-Amherst) told 22News that changes could be necessary as new data comes in from states that have already legalized pot.

Fifty-four percent of Massachusetts covers agreed to legalize recreational marijuana for adults over the age of 21. The Cannabis Control Commission will make regulations and begin accepting license applications for retail stores in 2018.

Top state leaders are considering whether to make changes to the 10% tax on the drug. Rosenberg told reporters Thursday that he also wants to take a closer look at impaired driving, and edible marijuana products.

“We have to make sure that we cover all of the cost of setting up the regulatory system, implementing and enforcing, and we have to think about things like public safety costs and addiction,” Rosenberg said.

Recreational marijuana will become officially legal in Massachusetts on December 14.
