I remember the first time I smoked. It was a chunk of blond hash smoked through a home crafted steamroller, made from a short piece of two-inch pipe with a brass plumbing fixture bowl, masterfully crafted by one of my friends out of spare parts he found lying his father's garage. I didn't take the experience serious at the time, I was more interested in the lifestyle or culture that went along with being a smoker, you know, head shops, hippies and beads and all that shit. What a great time it was to be young and discovering bud for the first time. I had taken my first step into the 'counter culture' and I was happy to be there. In fact, I embraced it.

For as much as I embraced it you would not expect to be hearing this argument from me, it is time to let the counter culture go. Although not completely, just file it to the back of our minds in the fond memories folder and leave the tie-dye and beads to the youth.

The times they are a changing, successful attempts in several states has demonstrated through proper legislation that legalization can work. Allowing the cannabis business to grow and permitting people to make their own decisions on the matter are also important factors in the success of legalization. And oh how the cannabis business has grown, especially in Colorado where people are now opening their eyes to the monetary, medical, and social benefits of legalization more than ever before.

It is important, for people who do not smoke, to look at legalization in a legitimate light and not rely on age-old illogical arguments such as, "it leads to harder stuff" and so on, we have all heard them a million times. In this regard, we must also not let non-smokers and ourselves associate the new cannabis industry with the 'counter culture'.
