Gateway drug?

I first tried pot when I was 13 years old, and was told smoking a cigarette would increase my high by 30%!
About 2 years later my friend dislocated a disk in his back and started selling me his prescribed hydro codons, crushing and mixing them with my weed was damn good! Until I threw up in front of my dad and he lectured me outta the pills (he's very convincing)
1 more year later I moved to a big city and 2 weeks later I was charged with MIC and DUI for wrecking some guys car, and put on probation, which led to me smoking pep spice, and eventually pills again in order to come up 'clean'.
My craving for oxy and methadone, primarily, bought me an extra year of probation due to 'runaway' charge cuz I was too sick to sleep one night... I was diagnosed with depression, my liver started failing, and I had an unknown lump on my leftie. After 16 months of outpatient treatment, juvenile detention, behavioral therapy, etc... I was finally released! Although far from good health...
I was 17 and 1/2 when I started smoking weed again (about 4 hours after I was officially released). I had a job within 2 weeks, my GED that summer, and I took the initiative to drop synthetic drugs!
I'm 19 now and I smoke weed everyday, I quit cigarettes 6 months ago and I enjoy a dark ale occasionally. I haven't felt the need to see a counselor, my last checkup showed my liver has turned a 180 and is as healthy as my eating habits (which may need work) and the lump has since disappeared!
Is marijuana a gateway drug?
Or is it the paths we take as individuals that are a gateway to the life we choose?
