Bruce Hetzler will present “Medicinal Marijuana: Composition, Use and Effects” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 18, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

Sponsored by Winchester Academy, the program is free and open to the public

Hetzler will explore the composition of marijuana, including THC and CBD, and how this has changed over the years. He will also explain endocannabinoids and how marijuana works on the brain.

Hetzler will discuss the use of marijuana for both recreational and medical purposes, the administration and absorption of marijuana and possible negative effects on behavior and mental health when smoked.

Hetzler will answer common questions about marijuana: What medical problems could marijuana be helpful for? Why do people say they use medical marijuana? Which is better: botanical cannabis (plant) or THC medications? What are the research issues involved in studying marijuana? What is the usefulness of CBD medication?

Hetzler is a professor of psychology at Lawrence University in Appleton.

He has been teaching and conducting research since 1976. His research deals with the effects of drugs on brainwaves and behavior in laboratory rats.

Hetzler received his bachelor’s degree from DePauw University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Northwestern University.

His work appears in 49 scientific publications and he has presented at several international conferences, including in Japan, France, Germany and Finland.

Program expenses are funded through sponsors and tax-deductible donations.
