On Tuesday, voters will determine the immediate future of medical marijuana in Oklahoma.
But what does the Bible say about it? A group pushing to pass medical marijuana says the Bible supports it.
The group, Yes on 788, sent out a flyer displaying two Bible verses next to Sen. James Lankford’s picture.
“The pro-marijuana folks have turned it into a personal attack against me, attacking me and my biblical stance,” Lankford said.
In a news release, Yes on 788 asked the question, “How would Jesus vote?” The group also quoted Genesis 1:29 to convince Oklahomans to vote yes: “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.”
Lankford, a former Baptist pastor, called the group’s interpretation bizarre and ironic.
“That is certainly not the intent of Genesis Chapter 1,” Lankford said. “For someone to say Christians should believe marijuana should be good because the Bible says all plants are good is a big stretch from it.”
The flyer also quotes Exodus, saying, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”
“They have one vote. I have one vote,” Lankford said. “But I think I should be able to speak out on those issues without being personally attacked, especially for an issue of my faith.”
Lankford said he’s against the way State Question 788 is written, saying it’s really recreational marijuana instead of medical marijuana.
