Republican State Senator Mike Shirkey says the backers of a ballot proposal to legalize recreational marijuana in Michigan admitted to him it is not a well written law.

The Michigan House and Senate have until midnight Tuesday night to pass a ballot proposal or it will go before voters in November.

The Senate has the votes to pass the legalization of the drug, but the House is still short of enough support.

Shirkey said on an interview with WTVB Monday that the initiative is dangerous for Michigan and will create more chaos than when voters approved medical marijuana almost a decade ago.

Republican leaders in the Senate say they should be the ones to pass the initiative, not the voters. Democrats on the other hand want the issue decided by the people. They are hopeful the issue will increase voter turnout and help them take control of at least one legislative chamber.
