Residents in Freetown who attended the special election on Saturday voted to prohibit retail sales of marijuana.
The election was to decide on whether to adopt a bylaw for complete prohibition of sales within town limits, or to let regulations stay to the allowed number of marijuana retail dispensary licenses to 20 percent of the liquor store licenses in town. If approved, one dispensary license would have been issued for the town.
A yes vote was for prohibition, and a no vote was for the 20 percent rule.
Out of 5,855 registered voters in Freetown, only 7 percent voted. The unofficial ballot count shows 414 people voted in the election; 219 voted yes and 195 voted no.
The results of the 2016 state ballot question permitting recreational marijuana use and sales in Massachusetts showed that legalization did pass in the town by a vote of 53 percent to 47 percent.
The counts for the special election are currently unofficial and subject to change once absentee ballots are confirmed.
