A fire Tuesday afternoon apparently started by a marijuana grow operation badly damaged a detached garage at an East Oakland residence, authorities said.
At least 10 marijuana plants were found in the garage after the fire was contained, authorities said.
The fire also spread to a tree and vegetation at an adjacent backyard before it was contained.
The fire was reported at 1:28 p.m. in the garage in the 7800 block of Plymouth Street. Authorities said it may have started from a faulty light used in the grow operation or another associated electrical problem.
The fire spread to a backyard in the 7800 block of Lockwood Street where it burned the tree and vegetation but no structures.
It took 21 firefighters until 1:45 p.m. to control the fire, Battalion Fire Chief Tracey Chin said.
No injuries were reported and no one showed up claiming ownership of the garage or weed, officials said. Damage to the garage was estimated to be at least $10,000. The house on the property was not damaged.
