Medical Marijuana Seized in George

GEORGE, WA - The Grant County Sheriff's office investigated a medicinal marijuana growing operation in George Wednesday morning.

The raid came a day after the George City Council passed a six-month moratorium on medical marijuana collective gardens.

Members of Interagency Narcotics Enforcement Team visited a greenhouse on Chinook Avenue where they found about 20 marijuana plants growing in an area clearly visible from the street, according to Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones.

Plants were reportedly being grown in a nearby garage too.

Katherine Kenison, attorney for George and several other Columbia Basin cities, said the investigation likely occurred because state law requires medical marijuana grows to be screened from public view.

Sheriff's Chief Deputy Ryan Rectenwald said the owner of the grow was also in violation of a 15-plant limit placed on qualifying medical marijuana patients.

The plants were seized and no arrests were made, although Jones said a report will be forwarded to the county prosecutor's office for review.

Kenison clarified the moratoriums passed by George and other cities in the Columbia Basin apply to both new and existing operations, blocking "the licensing, establishment, maintenance or continuation of any medical marijuana collective garden."

George Mayor Elliot Kooy said the city's decision to approve the moratorium Tuesday night came not because they wanted to shut down any particular growing operation, but to avoid what has become a murky issue.

"The state says its OK, but the federal government says we don't care, it's still illegal," Kooy said. "We as a city wanted to stay out of the argument for awhile."
