the buds are 2-3 inches long but there are upto 20 branches on each plant anyone seen this before????

Do you know what strain i is? ive seen sativa's get pretty darn lanky. How long have you been flowering sir?

there not really lanky, ive no idea what strain it is i just pruned those 2 to show the buds and the ammount of arms\branches, ive been in flower for 5 weeks

In my growing experience I have saw this before. One was a plant inside that did not have efficient lighting. Weak light = weak buds. The other plant was outside in full bloom right beside my other plants. Turns out just as Spimp said, it was a Sativa (from bag seed) and

just grew that way. Nice smoke, but small buds on the tips of the branches. The plants beside it were giving me about half pound per plant while the Sativa gave me about an OZ. Happy growing!!!

Just to clarify...

You initially stated that your plants are 11 weeks old - and then you also stated that you are in week 5 of flower.

The plant does look to be a sativa type of plant.

The rest of this comment assumes you have a sativa that has been flowering for five weeks - after a 6 week veg.

In week 5 of flower on a sativa - you should not expect much. Even if it is a variety that you will harvest in 8 weeks (which would be a fast sativa) - a lot of the bud swell occurs during the last two weeks of the flowering period.

If it is a normal sativa - you should be looking at a ten to twelve week harvest - which would indicate that you are just finishing (at best) the first half of the flowering cycle. Again, most plants won't produce an impressive amount of buds during the first half of the flowering cycle.

If these things are true - I think you will be just fine. More plants are killed by over-anxious growers trying to fix non-existant problems than anyone will really admit...

Let it ride and don't worry about it.

PS - unless you are a rare type of grower, you don't have enough light. So i am not disagreeing with the comments on lights - that very well could be a part of the problem as well. Just trying to throw a different spin on things...

cHEERS I DONT THINK LIGHT IS AN ISSUE AS IVE GOT 4 X 600W OVER 20 PLANTS SO I'LL JUST KEEP DOIN WHAT IM DOING AND KEEP POSTING PICS AS THE GROW PROGRESSES tHANKS FOR YOU INPUT PEOPLE

Pictures?

I will post somr better photes if that will help, as i say these just look to have grown totally difarently to my last 5 grows?

Everything looks fine to me!

any idea how i can tell when their ready? to harvest

Absolutely... there is only one method that works with any variety at any time. You must look at the trichomes on the buds. Just from the pictures, and only making an educated guess, I would say you have at least two and maybe three more weeks. But see my explanation below, as harvest timing is not an exact science.

So how do you look at the trichomes to decide when things are ready to harvest?

First, you need a jewelers loupe... and a light is helpful. Here is a cheap one that I use for looking:

After you get the loupe, you use it to examine the trichomes on the buds. There are basically three states - clear, milky, and amber. The exact colors will vary with the variety - but everyone has the clear state.

When the trichomes are clear - you have not yet reached the peak of THC production.
When the trichomes are milky - you are at peak.
When the trichomes turn amber - they are past their prime.

You will never get the whole plant to turn at once. So you look at various parts of the plant and average the amounts of clear, milky, and amber trichomes.

And there is a LOT of personal preference in harvest timing. If you harvest early (when most trichomes are clear), you will get more of a mind buzz. If you harvest late (when most of the trichomes have turned amber) then you will get more of a body buzz.

I say "more of" because the type of high is predominantly determined by the plant type (indica for body buzz and sativa for mind buzz). So if you harvest a sativa late... it is a little like harvesting an indica early. And harvesting a sativa early produces an incredible mind buzz - too much for most.... perfect for active stoners. Harvesting an indica late will produce couch-lock... which is what many people desire for medicinal / pain management.

The best thing is to get a loupe, start looking and thinking about percentages, then harvest a bit when the trichomes are clear. Harvest some more when they are mostly milky. And then harvest the final bit after more than 50% have turned amber (or dark). If you keep the weed segregated - it will help to teach you the difference in high... it should be very apparent. You don't have to harvest a lot during this experiment - harvesting too early will reduce yield. So just take a bud or two and quick dry them to get an idea of how the weed will taste and the type of buzz.
